Cadence Europe · Q3 2026

Europe’s confidence says one thing. Its spending plans say another.

In four of eleven markets, households report confidence below their own long-run norm and intentions to make major purchases at or above it. Both are stated measures from the same survey: what people say, not what they spent.

It is not this quarter’s news. The count has held at three or four for seven straight quarters while the membership kept changing — nine of the eleven markets have been in that state at some point, and only one has never left it.

Eleven countries. Three sectors. One comparable view of where European markets move together, where they diverge, and what deserves a closer look.

Brand intelligence

The brands behind the European picture

Retail, finance and travel brands observed across more than one of the 11 country editions.

Retail & Grocery

Lidl · Aldi · IKEA · Amazon · Decathlon · Carrefour

Finance & Fintech

Revolut · N26 · bunq · ING · Qonto

Travel & Hospitality

Booking · TUI · Center Parcs

Brand coverage varies by market. Inclusion indicates observation, not a comparable European ranking or a published finding for every brand. A market that does not observe a brand is not a zero: the brand is outside that market's measurement, not measured as absent. Brands observed in a single market belong to that country edition.

What the complete European report reveals

The European edition reads all 11 markets on one footing. It answers:

  1. 01 Which European markets are changing direction, and which are holding course? Three of eleven markets changed position this quarter. The report names them, the direction each moved, and where every market sits on both measures.
  2. 02 Where are households still planning major purchases while their confidence sits below its own norm? Four of eleven eligible markets. The report names them and publishes both gaps market by market, so the size of the divergence is visible and not just its existence.
  3. 03 Where would a single European strategy miss a difference that matters locally? Four measures ranked across all eleven markets, each read against its own history rather than against the others, with every market that withholds a measure named rather than quietly dropped.
  4. 04 How different are Europe’s cultural landscapes, and what can that measure actually carry? Domestic share of the music chart spans 0.0% to 76.6%, measured in 8 of 11 markets. The report shows where each market sits and states plainly what the measure does not establish about preference for local brands.
  5. 05 What should a European strategist be watching next quarter? Four open questions come out of this quarter’s evidence. The report sets out what would have to change before any of them could be answered more strongly.

The questions are listed here. The answers are in the report.

Inside Cadence Europe

Eleven markets. One connected picture.

01

Europe at a glance

The eleven markets read on one footing, and what that single view does and does not settle.

02

What changed this quarter

The movements, what repeats across markets, how far the set spreads, and where two measures of the same market point different ways.

03

Eleven markets, different directions

Every market placed on confidence and big-ticket intent, each against its own long-run history rather than against its neighbours.

04

Where Europe moves together

The patterns that hold in more than one market, each carrying the set of markets it was measured across.

05

Where Europe diverges

The ranked comparisons that show how wide the set really is, with the markets that withhold a measure named rather than omitted.

06

Retail, finance and travel

A European verdict for each desk, and what that verdict licenses a strategist to say.

07

When the signals disagree

Independent measures of one market pointing opposite ways, reported as a disagreement with nothing inferred from it.

See the differences that matter.

Understand market direction

See which markets are changing relative to their own histories, and which are holding where they were.

Identify divergence

Find where confidence, stated intentions and observed activity tell different stories about the same market.

Investigate competitive context

Move from the European picture down into the country edition that produced it, on the same evidence.

Build more informed strategies

See which assumptions about Europe hold across the set, and which deserve testing market by market.

Cadence makes descriptive claims about how markets currently behave. It does not forecast demand, measure market share or establish causation, and a cross-market observation is never a ranking of the countries in it.
